What is the true meaning of peace, prosperity, or in this context, development? We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a book that revolves around these questions. The story revolves around the land of Voulhire from different points of view: A King, a lord, a mage, and a fugitive. The ambition of each of these characters to utilize the land and its advantages connects them despite leading separate lives along the lines of the universe.
Meldorath, the major antagonist, is introduced in the book's opening scene in the town of Hillport. Throughout the book, he raises questions about your perception of his evilness, and you frequently find yourself siding with him in his fight for magical supremacy. The plot then quickly shifts to Galen Bray, the ostensible main character, who flees the Land of the Princes for Magnum Caelum in order to collect an inheritance that would give him a shot at a better life. King Wilhelm in Soulhire, the ruler of Voulhire, who yearns to return the nation to the way it was in his youth, and Midius Maido, the head of the Mianora (a council charged with determining and appointing the heirs to the throne), who you wonder if he supports the King throughout the book, slowly draw you in. Finally, the Riva Rohavi, a tribe whose actual identity and purpose are not completely revealed throughout the game, lead you on a perplexing trip. From chapter to chapter, Matthew Tysz's book takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster that keeps them wondering about the motivations, goals, and behaviors of each character.
The book, in my opinion, differs significantly from the typical "Character Point-of-View" novel format. It initially appears confusing and disorganized, like a collection of various unrelated stories. However, when one digs further, the connection becomes more obvious and aids in properly comprehending the mystery and background of the Land of Voulhire. I adored how the author focused on each individual and how they affected the various areas they called home.
The book starts off slow and flat and picks up emotion with a gradual pace giving great detail on the progress in each character’s life. My favorite part of the book was towards the ending chapters where the storyline took an unexpected turn, no doubt with the purpose to keep one hooked and hungry for detail. At the end of the book, the reader is sure to be left asking, ‘What happened next?’ by the massive cliffhanger. A New Arrival under Great Skies, the first book of the Voulhire series, is packed with the vibe of questions upon questions. I must warn that the book has some information on abuse, but fortunately, not to the point of gruesome details.
I rate the book a 5 out of 5 for its storyline, suspense, emotion, and professional editing. Also, I greatly appreciate that the author put in a glossary for a proper understanding of the vocabulary specific to the book. I highly recommend this to readers of all ages who love magic, suspense, drama, plot twists, and detective stories.
