What if you had the power to control whether a person lived? Once or twice in our lives, this question has come into our minds leaving us with wild imaginations. In his book, E. Alan Fleischauer shows one of the many scenarios that could occur if a person holds the power of life and death, or in this context, just death.
Just Die is a story about a young man named Jake Silver who was approaching the peak of his life when he experienced a life-changing incident. After surviving a stroke, he discovers he has a power that enables him to end the life of a living thing with just two words, "Just Die". With his fiancée, Beth Ann, and driver-friend, Omar, Jake goes from a simple Victorian Financial planner to the dream American hero, with a series of trials and tests to his name and being. The story explains the saying, “With great power comes great responsibility”.
I learned from the book that everyone we cross paths with, even if for a fleeting second, has a role to play in our life. I loved how the author made the most insignificant seeming instances to change the course of the story or create an opening. Jake's trio team was also a personal favourite. They always cheered him on, creating ways to make him feel comfortable and thankful for his power, alongside other key characters in the book. I also greatly appreciated that the author made Jake's growth purely human - running away from unfamiliar dangers and taking a watchful approach when addressing them. It gives the book a highly realistic view that the reader can relate to. The book teaches self-acceptance, teamwork, and justice.
I enjoyed every part of the book except for the author’s repetitive use of the word ‘guy’ whenever many male characters were in a scene. As such scenes were usually fast-paced, it was hard to follow up on which male character was being referred to, and also gave an overly casual to distasteful feeling in such scenes.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. The book was quite interesting until the last chapters where a rushed summary was given to conclude the outcome of all the characters in the book. Personally, it was quite disappointing and felt like an abrupt break from the pace at which the storyline was going. I feel the ending scenes should have been paced similarly to the rest of the book, nonetheless, the book is professionally edited and has a great plot.
I greatly recommend this book to the teenage and young adult audience. Lovers of action, drama, suspense, and easy-to-digest concepts will also enjoy this book. I highly recommend this as a must-have for the adventurous spirit.
